You can forget your Christmas trees and advent calendars – Christmas time for us means decorating the fireplace!
This, after all, is the focal point of the rooms we spend most of our time in. There’s nothing we enjoy more than lugging down the boxes of decorations and making our firesides look festive.
If you have fireplaces and are struggling for inspiration, here are some tips and pointers to get you the Christmas hearthside you will love this December!
Boughs
The easiest thing you can do to make your mantlepiece go from everyday to Christmas Day in seconds. Artificial pine festoons can be picked up cheaply, and look wonderful in the evenings when paired with fairy lights. Some tasteful ribbons and pine cone decorations set this design up to look good for the whole month.
Top Tip
Use the real thing! Cut boughs from the garden and intersperse with holly and mistletoe for a magically festive look.
Candles
How much do we love candles? They provide the perfect decoration – so simple but so atmospheric. We love clusters of church candles on mantlepieces – these can be teamed with any type of decoration, we love the oversized wreath in the picture above.
Top Tip
Combine some fragranced candles in with your collection. Christmas-scented candles – with cloves, citrus, cinnamon and vanilla – are readily available on the high street. These not only look great but make the whole house smell Christmas-ready.
Paper Garlands
This is a look that suits houses with a cool Nordic minimalism. Paper garlands and dainty bunting give a wonderful understated look and can be used in bunches. Combine a dark colour with seasonal silvers and golds to achieve this style.
Top Tip
You can buy strings of garlands and buntings online, but if you’ve got the right kit, you can easily knock these up at home. Old scraps of fabric can be cut into circles and triangles – not only looking beautiful, but saving you a lot of money!
Pom-poms & Stockings
The traditional Christmas stocking has had a revamp! We love the look of strings of soft fluffy pom poms and chunky knit stockings together – so simple, but it’s unmistakably Christmas.
Top Tip
Keep this look simple. Keep the palette muted, and decorations minimal. Little splashes of mistletoe and candles will keep this cosy, warm decor looking its best.
The Colour Pop
Christmas is all about the children, and if it’s one thing that kids love, it’s colour. We adore the look above which uses cut out leaves to create an evergreen explosion around the hearth. While oversized flowers are used as accents around the festoon, we especially love the dyed wooden logs!
Top Tip
If you’re not cut out for this level of creativity, concentrate on highly coloured baubles, candles and festive ornaments to draw attention to the fireplace.
