Tips for cleaning your woodburner stove

Spring is here and that can only mean one thing – it’s time for a spring clean!

Cleaning your woodburner stove may seem like a daunting task if you don’t know how to approach it; but here at ELB Fireplaces, we’ve got you covered. Read on for our top tips on how to clean your woodburner stove to get it looking brand new, in no time at all.

Why is now the time to clean your woodburner stove?

Well, if a spring clean wasn’t enough of an incentive, you should also know that cleaning your stove at least once a year is actually incredibly important to repair any rust spots, touch up the paintwork and order new parts. This keeps your stove in full working order, as well as ensuring it always looks its best.

Tips for cleaning your woodburner stove

1 Only work on stoves that are cold

It goes without saying, but you should only ever clean your appliance when it is ice cold; cleaning it in any other way may risk damage to yourself, or your stove. We would recommend starting the cleaning process in the morning, after the stove has been off overnight. If you cannot wait this long, several hours of dormancy should be enough to cool it down.

2 Use a stiff-bristled brush

Using a hard brush means you can really get to grips with tough dirt and grime. You should use a stiff-bristled brush to brush away any soot and tar deposits – mind the paintwork, though !

3 Wave goodbye to rust

Rust has the potential to damage the working potential of your woodburner stove. Typically, your stove shouldn’t rust, but if it comes in to conditions in which is is susceptible to rust, then it is important to keep on top of this. You can remove rust by simply rubbing away with a medium grade steel wool gently until the rust is removed.

Top tip: make sure you’re wearing protective gloves when dealing with steel wool!

4 Keep those windows clean

A woodburner stove can result in sooty windows which may lower its aesthetic appeal, the good news is however, is that the windows are super easy to clean. Simply wipe the window with a stove glass cleaner, leave for 5 minutes then remove with a damp cloth – the windows will be gleaming in no time at all.

Top tip: seeing as it isn’t a time consuming task, you should aim to clean the windows of your stove at least biweekly to ensure it is always looking its best.

5 Check the parts

Although uncommon, every so often your stove may need a part replacement. Though you should be able to tell when a part isn’t working properly as performance will be hindered, it’s worth double checking that all of your parts look (and are working) the way they should.

At the end of the day, cleaning your stove doesn’t have to be a daunting task, it actually is incredibly easy and takes no time at all.
